TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (Mehr News Agency) -- Actress Mahnaz Afshar on Thursday paid a visit to an organization in Tehran which supports and helps child laborers, and donated part of the money earned from one of her movies.
In an unexpected call at the institution located on Molavi St. in southern Tehran, she took the children by surprise and spent several hours with them.
She visited their classrooms, chatted with them, sat with them at their desks and presented them with flowers and New Year cards, (Iran's New Year begins on March 21st.)
The children gave Afshar an enthusiastic reception and showed their pleasure by quoting parts of her movie dialogues.
Afshar believes that artists have an even greater responsibility than others to address social problems, saying, "We must feel responsible, I believe that artists must take this task more seriously, and it is (their duty) all over the world."
She continued, "I think this is the first step. I have seen many talented and gifted children here who need ongoing support. They need to continue their studies and make a better future for themselves."
Afshar also invited other actors and actresses to become earnestly involved in these kinds of social activities.
The organization is financed and run by individuals and charities. It is currently looking after 600 children, along with their families, and aims to standardize their health and education.
