Iran's Judiciary Chief bans public executions

Shahroudi

Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA - Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi on Wednesday issued a decree on Tuesday banning execution in public. "No execution should be carried out in public henceforth," Ayatollah Shahroudi said, according to the Media Center of the Judiciary.

"From now on, execution would only be carried out in public whether the Judiciary chief approves so," it said.

"Executions would be carried out in public only on approval by the Judiciary chief if there had been growing need for doing so," said the order.

Ayatollah Shahroudi also banned mass media from publishing any photo or image of the execution.

Shahroudi also assigned all public prosecutors "to monitor proper implementation of the order."
