Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality to protest "warmongering" by Richmond Times Dispatch

By Phil Wilayto, editor, The Richmond Defender; for the Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality

Sisters and Brothers,

The Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality are asking you to join us this Saturday, July 26, for an important protest outside the offices of the Richmond Times Dispatch - 1 p.m., 300 W. Franklin St.

This protest, initiated by the group RVA4Peace and supported by the Defenders and the Richmond Peace Education Center, will be raising the demands: "Stop the warmongering! No War on Iran!"

People's Peace Delegation to Iran

Just like in the build-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the media - local and national - is repeating the lies of the Bush administration. With Iraq, it was "weapons of mass destruction." With Iran, it's "nuclear weapons" - even though Bush's own spy agencies say that charge is not true.

Iran is not a threat to the U.S. It's the other way around: Iran has oil. If its main export were cabbage, there would be no "crisis."

On Saturday, Aug. 2, there will be a regional protest in Virginia Beach, outside the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base (Noon, Gate 5, intersection of Independence Blvd. and Shore Drive.) This protest will also demand No War on Iran. Initiated by the Hampton Roads Peace & Justice Coalition, it's being supported by anti-war groups throughout the state, including the Defenders.

Since the war in Iraq began more than five years ago, it has taken the lives of up to a million Iraqis, more than 4,000 GIs and more than 1,000 private contractors - not to mention more than $500 billion of our tax money.

When the Iraq war began, oil was selling for $23 a barrel. Today it's 132.00 What do you think it will be if the U.S. or Israel attacks Iran?

Why do you think Richmond is cutting back on bus service? or has no money to fix its schools? or can't pay its workers a decent wage? It's because the state and federal governments have cut back on their support for the cities - because the tax money is going to the war.

It's time to connect the dots and see that what happens half-way around the world affects our lives here at home.

Spend an hour or so this Saturday standing for peace and justice.

Join us in front of the Times-Dispatch at 1 p.m.

in solidarity,

Phil Wilayto
