Press TV - Iran's national soccer team has defeated the United Arab Emirates at the 2010 World Cup qualifiers thanks to a disputed first-half goal.
Midfielder Fereidoun Zandi scored the winner for the visitors in the 9th minute, after a Mas'ud Shojaee through pass inside the 18-yard-box.
The referee turned down an appeal by Emiratis, who believed Zandi was offside when the ball reached him.
Having conceded an early goal, the UAE made a lot of efforts to make a breakthrough but was denied by Iran's goalkeeper several times.
The UAE mostly dominated throughout the match, while Iran's concern was to hold on to its narrow lead.
Iran now stands atop group five with six points followed by UAE and Syria with five. Syria will take on Kuwait on Sunday.
The victory was Iran's first in the 2010 World Cup qualification round. Ali Daei's side had drawn their first three matches.
