TEHRAN, June 15 (Mehr News Agency) -- Any departure from parliamentary rules is unjust and warrants punishment, Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said in Tehran on Sunday.
"Any deviation from the Majlis rules not only is a violation of government regulations and warrants punishment, but causes a disruption in the divine order and tradition and is an injustice," Larijani opined.
Larjani called Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei's remarks to the newly-elected lawmakers during a meeting on Tuesday important guidelines for understanding Majlis principles.
During the meeting with the Eighth Majlis lawmakers, Ayatollah Khamenei said the parliament must approve comprehensive and straightforward laws which can be implemented in all situations and are meant to resolve the people's problems.
Legislation is of great importance for the Islamic Republic, which has blazed a new path for mankind, the Supreme Leader observed.
Monitoring the activities of the other branches of government is another important duty of the Majlis, which should be carried out in a non-divisive manner, Ayatollah Khamenei stated.
Larijani said that following the Supreme Leader's advice will bring about prosperity.
The Majlis speaker also called on MPs to fulfill the nation's needs in line with their divine responsibility.
"We won't compromise" on progress and justice in the country, he added.
Monitoring the performance of the other branches of government, fulfilling duties, and drafting comprehensive and efficient laws are at the top of the Majlis agenda, he stated.
Nuclear talks welcomed
Commenting on EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana's visit to Iran, Larijani said Tehran welcomes negotiations to settle the nuclear dispute.
Solana on Saturday presented a new package of proposals to Iran with the aim of ending a six-year nuclear standoff between Tehran and the West.
Iran's stance is in line with international law and the major powers should not try to implement the theory of neglect, which will get them nowhere, Larijani said.
"The Majlis is vigilant in defending the nation's rights" and thus "the 5+1 package will be studied in the Majlis," he added.
