Rafsanjani advocates democracy envisaged by Iran's Constitution

Tehran, June 18, IRNA - Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Wednesday advocated democracy envisaged by the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He said that the people should exercise their constitutional rights by undertaking more active role in political affairs.

"Public opinion makes fewer mistakes."

Addressing a seminar on the government and administrative system, the senior cleric said, "Giving a chance and freedom to people to play more active role in political affairs is a major step which must be taken."

"Nothing should be imposed on people and they should be given the opportunity to choose based on their own will."

"People's active presence would also save the country from foreign pressures as no country could ever put any pressure on a nation who is determined to govern its own fate," Rafsanjani stated.

Praising people's resistance to foreign pressures, Rafsanjani said when people play active role in the society, then they would solve any possible problem without referring to the government.

Rafsanjani stressed the need for complete implementation of Iran's Constitution noting that would make the country "one of the most democratic states of the world."

He noted that referring to the public opinion was one of the principal values of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.
