Photos: Marking Arbaein in Isfahan, Iran

Isfahan photos by Amir Masud Abri, ISNA

The Day of Ashura is on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar and marks the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram but not the Islamic month. It is commemorated by the Shi'a as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (December 10, 680 AD).  Arbaein is the 40th day of Husayn's martyrdom, and it is observed widely by the Shi'a Muslims. The following photos are from Arbaein commemoration held in Isfahan, Iran.
