Iranian team in Baghdad for talks with US on Iraq

Baghdad, March 5, IRNA - An Iranian delegation arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday for the fourth round of talks with the US on Iraqi security. Reza Amiri-Moqaddam, head of the Iranian negotiating team, said according to the schedule, the fourth round of Iran-US talks on Iraq will start on Thursday.

Upon arrival in Baghdad, he added that an Iraqi delegation will also attend the talks.

The Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great importance to establishment of security in Iraq, he said adding that Tehran will do its best to materialize this goal.

The fourth round of talks is to be held at the request of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki from Iran.

According to reports, al-Maliki and Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, in their separate meetings with the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last week, called for resumption of Iran-US talks on Iraq.

The Iranian and US officials have so far held three rounds of talks on Iraqi situation on May 28, July 24 and August 6, 2007 respectively.

The talks were attended by Iran's Ambassador to Iraq Hassan Kazemi Qomi, his US counterpart Ryan Crocker and representatives of the Iraqi government.
