Several hundred mostly Americans of Persian (Iranian) heritage along with American friends and other nationalities celebrated Norouz, the Iranian (Persian) New Year on March 21, 2008 in the Great Hall of the City College of New York.
The all family event was organized and sponsored by the City College's Persian Student Association (PSA). The highlight of the event was dancing performances by two groups of youths, the first, teens, from Ferdowsi School in Long Island, and the other by a spontaneously formed younger number of kids; both groups received repeated applause, as they brought back nostalgic memories of the distant past.
What was most striking about the evening was a clear sense of belonged-ness by everyone present in a flat egalitarian ambiance, and in an otherwise majestic Great Hall.
The divine Persian cuisine was sandwiched with two historical documentaries on Iran, a keynote speech on Norouz: The Persian Civilization and the contributions of Iranian-Americans by Professor Davood Rahni, classical Persian Ensemble by Maestro Amir Vahab, Polka DJ music, singers and a preamble warm welcoming remarks by Dr. Gregory Williams the City College President.
The participants had nothing but appreciation for City College and praises for the flawless flow of the evening and looked forward to partaking in the next year gathering.
