Press TV - Israeli prime minister Olmert has suggested the imposition of a naval blockade against Iran in an effort to stop its nuclear program.
Ehud Olmert made the statement in a meeting with visiting US congressional leader, Nancy Pelosi, Ha'aretz daily said.
"The present economic sanctions have exhausted themselves," Olmert told Pelosi, adding that the international community needed to take more drastic steps to stop Iran's efforts to obtain nuclear weapons.
Olmert's suggestions, included a naval blockade of Iran using US warships to limit the movement of Iranian merchant vessels, the report said.
Olmert also proposed that international restrictions be placed on Iranian aircraft, business executives and senior officials as well. "Iranian businesspeople who would not be able to land anywhere in the world would pressure the regime," Olmert was quoted as saying.
The US-backed regime of Israel which is in possession of nearly 200 nuclear warheads is accusing the Islamic Republic of jeopardizing the stability of the region through its civil nuclear program.
Iran has repeatedly dismissed accusations that it seeks a nuclear bomb, saying its enrichment activities are completely in line with the international laws.
