Next Speaker of Iran's Parliament: Ali Larijani

TEHRAN, May 25 (Mehr News Agency) - Ali Larijani was elected as the next parliament speaker in an official meeting of the conservative lawmakers on Sunday afternoon.

He won 160 votes of a total 217 ballots. His rival Gholam-Ali Hadad-Adel only received 50 votes. Seven lawmakers abstained to vote for either candidate.

Prior to voting, Larijani and Hadad-Adel addressed the meeting for 30 and 40 minutes respectively on their plans for a better management of the Majlis.

7th Majlis wraps up!

Larijani was elected to parliament from the shrine city of Qom. He was the Supreme National Security Council chief and Iran's top negotiator in nuclear talks before resigning the post last October.

He also served as the national TV chief for ten years.

Hadad-Adel was the head of the seventh Majlis. The small number of votes received by him indicates that the conservatives who also held the majority in the previous parliament were not satisfied with his performance.

The new parliament is the eighth of its kind since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The term of the seventh parliament ended officially on Sunday.
