DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 1 (Mehr News Agency) -- Saudi Arabia won its opening AFC U-19 Championship match over Iran thanks to a late header by Nawaf Al Abid on Friday.
In the match was held at Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium, Mohammed Abusabaan gave the hosts the lead in the 8th minute from the penalty spot.
Sepahan of Isfahan striker Ehsan Hajsafi brought Iran level from the penalty spot in the 34th minute.
Well-organized Iran put Saudi Arabia under pressure in the second half. Mohsen Mosalman missed a glorious chance to give Iran the lead but failed to score.
The hosts finally opened Iran's goal four minutes from time when Al Abid converted Sultan Al Beshi's pinpoint cross.
The result leaves Saudi Arabia at the top of Group A alongside Japan, who defeated Yemen 5-0.
Iran is scheduled to play pacesetters Japan on Sunday.
