The Safavids were an Iranian Shia dynasty which ruled Persia from 1501/1502 to 1722. Safavids established the greatest Iranian empire since the Islamic conquest of Persia

Birjand is the provincial capital of South Khorasan province in eastern Iran. The city of Birjand had a population of 157848 people at the time of the last official census in 2006.

South Khorasan Province consists of 7 counties: Birjand, Ferdows, Qaen, Sarayan, Nehbandan, Darmian and Sarbisheh. South Khorasan is one the three provinces that were created after the division of Khorasan in 2004.
