Press Release by
National Iranian American Council (NIAC)
NIAC congratulates President Elect
Barack Obama on his
historic victory on November 4, 2008. This victory represents many 'firsts' for
the United States of America. One of the most important 'firsts' is the

discourse and proved that running a positive, issues-based campaign can be a
This is an important lesson for the United States as a whole, and particularly
for the Iranian-American community. For too long, political advancement has been
achieved not by excelling in the deliverance of services to the community, but
by undercutting the work and reputation of others.
Obama's historic success and his refusal to reciprocate attacks against his
persona serve as important reminders of the true meaning of leadership and
commitment to the public good.
NIAC would also like to congratulate the thousands of
Iranian Americans who participated in the election by organizing in their
communities, raising or donating money, or simply by voting.
Though we may not all be satisfied with the outcome of the election, we can all
be proud of the unprecedented level of Iranian-American participation in the
democratic process this year.
Now our task is to ensure that this burst of activity is not the exception to
the rule, but rather the beginning of an important change in our community's
commitment to civic engagement.
