PJAK attacks along Iran borders decline

Press TV - An Iranian provincial police commander says clashes between security forces and PJAK terrorist group has declined over the past year.

The Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), is responsible for a number of fatal bombings in western Iran and southern Turkey during the past few years.

The group announced on Monday that it has halted all operations in Iran and will begin fighting the Turkish military.

"Our forces have clashed with the anti-Iranian group 65 times," West Azerbaijan provincial police commander Brigadier Hassan Karami said on Sunday. "This shows a 13 percent decline," he added.

Over the past seven months, police have killed 13 PJAK militants and injured 24 others in border areas of West Azerbaijan province, Karami said.

Iranian security forces have long been fighting Kurdish militants on the country's western borders with Iraq and Turkey.

According to a November 2006 article published by The New Yorker, the US military and Israel provide PJAK with equipment, training and vital intelligence in a bid to destabilize the Iranian government.
