TEHRAN, Nov. 14 (Mehr News Agency) -- The Iranian woman karateka Helen Sepahi was dismissed from the 19th World Karate championships in Tokyo, Japan on Friday due to her Islamic sport clothing.

Sepahi stood on the tatami mat to fight her Chinese opponent but the officials insisted she remove her hijab where men were present. Subsequently, the Iranian athlete refused and was forced out of the competitions according to the international rules. Sepahi was praised by the fans at the Budokan Hall.
A total of 1,200 competitors from 120 countries are taking part in the 19th World Karate Championships in Tokyo, Japan from November 10 to 16.
