Tehran, Nov 17, IRNA - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took part in a special
ceremony in Orumiyeh on Monday to inaugurate the new bridge named after Shahid
Kalantari which connects East and West Azarbaijan provinces. Construction of the
bridge started some 29 years ago.
The first phase of the bridge which passes over Orumiyeh lake was
commissioned on Monday but other phases which include a return passage as well
as a rail track will be implemented in coming years, said the president.
He expressed the hope that the new project will meet the needs of people in
both provinces.
President Ahmadinejad also lauded the invaluable services of Iranian experts
who spare no efforts to implement such a magnificent project.
President Ahmadinejad concluded his one-day visit and returned to Tehran
Monday afternoon.
About Lake Orumiyeh:
Lake Urmia is a salt lake
in northwestern Iran near Turkey. The lake is between the provinces of East
Azarbaijan and West Azarbaijan, west of the southern portion of the similarly
shaped Caspian Sea. It is the largest lake inside Iran, and the second salt
water lake on earth, with a surface area of approximately 5,200 km square (2,000
mile square).
