Mahak,
the childrens cancer charity of Tehran which was formed and is built on love is
thriving on the hope and joy of giving by the many good supporters who met last
week, before the Ramadan month of fasting ended, at a ceremony which was held in
honor of Mahak's good and traditional and caring donors and the diplomatic
community for eftari- a special meal to break the daily fast- at the
auditorium at Mahak Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Darabad.
Although
the Tehran traffic was unusually bad and it took us 35 minutes to do less than
200 meters, we managed to get there not too late as we had left early. At the
ceremony we met Dr Karbassi-Zadeh, the chair of Mahak Board - and the lovely Mrs
Karbassi-Zadeh as well as Dr Nader Sharifi, the head of International relations
and husband of the founder Mrs. Saideh Ghods who was away visiting their
children, and Mrs Lajevardi who is a very active board member of Mahak. The
French and Italian ambassadors and their wives were present as well as many
other dignitaries from all aspects of professional and business communities,
including Dr Elhighomshie, Haj agha Ale-Toame who delighted the audience with
his wit and anecdotes during his speech during the program, about giving and
sponsoring good deeds at Mahak.
On this
night, like many other events at Mahak what touches one's heart is not only the
wonderful spirit of unity that everybody is working towards a common goal of
making a better life for children who suffer from cancer and allowing these
darlings - as they must be someones if not ours- to think about the bright
future free from pain and suffering and new born life based on hope and
contemplation for high and wonderful achievments

About Mahak:
About two decades ago a mother who had experienced
having a child with cancer and had witnessed first hand the difficulties faced
by her child, pledged to set up a center that would act as a refuge for children
and their families in a similar situation. With the assistance of the same
friends and relatives who had helped her through her own ordeal, a board of
trustees was selected and MAHAK Society to Support Children suffering from
Cancer was set up as a non profit, non-governmental organization and was
registered under number 6567 in 1991. MAHAK has been active from that day on in
helping children with cancer and their families.
