Tehran, Sept 30, IRNA - Iran will never buy even a single kilogram of wheat directly from the US, said the spokesman of Agriculture Jihad Ministry.
Speaking to IRNA Tuesday, Mohammad Hossein Ansari added that an accurate estimate on the demand for imported wheat is still not available but some five to six million tons will be purchased from abroad.
"Iran prefers to procure its requirements from Central Asian states, Australia or Argentina," he said, noting that in view of the competitive market, there is no need to buy wheat from a single country.
There is still no need for haste in this respect; rather wheat will be imported gradually and in accordance with consumption, Ansari noted.
Wheat import is projected to reach two million tons until October 21, he said.
Asked about the lack of accurate estimate about the demand for imported wheat, he said the total domestic wheat production has not yet been marketed and some farmers prefer to store their output in order to sell it at higher prices since they believe that the government buys it at low rates.
