Vienna, Oct 1, IRNA - Iran's Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA) Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said in Vienna Wednesday that Iran will
continue cooperation with the IAEA, expecting the Agency not to take any steps
beyond its charter and comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
"We will continue cooperation with the Agency, but it is important that the
institution not take any action beyond the charter and the comprehensive
Safeguards Agreement," Soltanieh told IRNA on the sidelines of the IAEA annual
General Conference on Wednesday.
Soltanieh said, "The US tries to impose duties on the Agency beyond the charter,
while the Agency is a specialized institution.
We will not let adoption of such measures either in the areas of inspection and
control or other fields."
He said the US and certain western states use the Safeguards as a pretext to
push a resolution through General Conference.
"Every year, they (the US and certain western states) raise such an issue but
the Non-Aligned Movement members and certain other alliances will not allow
materialization of such a demand and imposition of more judicial commitments,"
Asked about certain measures to make the Additional Protocol binding, Soltanieh
said, "They tried hard to make the Additional Protocol binding but failed
because that is something voluntary. As mentioned in NAM statement in Tehran and
registered in the Board of Governors, voluntary actions can not be turned
