Majid Majidi, director of "The Song of Sparrows" is convinced that humanity and wisdom made this movie and his other productions famous worldwide.
Majidi and actor Reza Naji, who watched the movie at the Ferdowsi Hall of the University of Tehran with students on Monday evening, participated in the question and answer panel afterwards.
He said, "I never think of filmmaking as a career. I entered this realm with the intention of opening a new path and it was God who helped me on this path.
"My movies begin from the heart of the society. One of my concerns has always been mankind and the problems of urban living. And these lead me to make 'The Song of Sparrows,'" he explained.
"Once, when I was visiting an ostrich farm outside of Tehran, I noticed one of the workers there and it was then that the character of Karim (Reza Naji) was formed in my mind. He is a person with a soft and delicate heart," he remarked.

To the question of why he chose the title "The Song of Sparrows" for his movie, he replied, "The song of a sparrow has no beauty in itself. What is beautiful is the self-respect of this bird, and Karim has this characteristic. Despite his gruff outward appearance, inside he has a warm and kind heart and I wanted to show this apparent paradox in my movie."
Majidi also answered a question about depicting poverty in his productions and continued, "Many reviews have been written on this issue over the past years and some believe that this has been a major success of the productions, but if poverty guarantees the success of a film, we only need to go to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to make our productions there. I believe what made this movie and other productions world-famous was humanity and wisdom."
He also remarked that he likes to make use of the Azeri accent in his movies, "I like this language and the accent. It has its own special beauty. Some make use of regional accents to make people laugh at their work, but in my movies, the accent has its own purpose. The Azeri language enjoys a solidarity of its own with the warm and friendly characters in the films."
Reza Naji also made a short speech and said that Majidi knows cinema well and always strives for an original product not a replica of that which already exists.
"The Song of Sparrows" is representing Iran at the 81st Annual Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Films category.
The movie is a bittersweet parable about the struggles of a family living in a rural area outside Tehran.
Actor Naji won the Silver Bear prize for best actor at the 58th annual Berlin International Film Festival for his role in "The Song of Sparrows". The film has previously received several accolades at the Iranian festival.
