TEHRAN, Oct. 15 (Mehr News Agency)--Two goals from Mehdi Mahdavikia and Javad Nekounam against North Korea gave Iran a victory in Group 2 of the Asian Zone qualifying round for the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
Mahdavikia's header put Iran ahead in the 10th minute. Iran's team captain striked a header past the visitors' keeper on the brink of six yards zone with a cross from Mojtaba Jabbari.
Javad Nekounam, Pamplona-based Osasuna midfielder, doubled the score in the 63rd minute in front of about 60,000 at the Azadi Stadium, taking advantage of the Korean defenders errors in front of the goal.
The Korean team took control shortly after and managed to create some dangerous opportunities but Iran's keeper Seyyed Mehdi Rahmati saved all of them.
North Korea eventually changed the scoreboard in the 71st minute. Jong Tae-se pulled a goal back for the Koreans, when his header flew past Rahmati at the far post but it was not enough to tie the match.
Iran placed second in Group 2 with four points after South Korea with the same points.
The team is scheduled to play the UAE on November 19 in Dubai.
