Khatami, Austrian president discuss Iran-EU relations

TEHRAN, Oct. 28 (Mehr News Agency) - Iran's former president Mohammad Khatami and Austrian President Heinz Fischer exchanged views on relations between Iran and the European Union.

"Mohammad Khatami and Heinz Fischer held talks over Iran-European Union relations in their meetings on yesterday (Monday) afternoon," Fischer spokesman told the state news agency.

Khatami and Fischer also discussed the global financial crisis and Iran's nuclear issue.

The two sides insisted on the need to settle international conflicts and called for establishing security in the Middle Eastern region.

Khatami, who heads the Center for Dialogue among Civilizations, has visited Vienna at the invitation of a number of Austrian researches and religious activists.

Khatami has won international fame for his initiative of 'dialogue among civilizations'. He has made many visits across the world, including the United States, to promote dialogue between the Islamic and Western civilizations.

In line with his efforts to promote dialogue among civilizations, the Religion in the Modern World conference was held in Tehran from October 13 to 16.

The conference brought together many celebrated dignitaries, including former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, former EU Commission president Romano Prodi, three former presidents, Mary Robinson (Ireland), Jorge Sampaio (Portugal), and Joseph Deiss (Switzerland), and two former prime ministers, Lionel Jospin (France) and Kejll Magne Bondevik (Norway).

Khatami told the conference that the "essence and nature of religions are the same" and minor differences should not prevent friendly relations between members of different religious groups.
