Press TV - Iran's Communication and IT Minister says China with the help of Iran and Thailand has put a joint research satellite into orbit.
Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mohammad Soleimani in a televised speech said that the satellite was launched on Saturday.
"Several countries contributed to the design and construction of the rocket, but Iran, China and Thailand completed the project and are entitled to use the data provided by the satellite," Soleimani said.
He said that the satellite is equipped with several cameras and will send videos and pictures of Earth to ground station
The satellite is aimed at forecasting natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, deforestation and reduction of water resources, the official said.
Iran and its two allies will employ the satellite jointly to fight natural disasters and conduct aerospace researches, the minister said.
Iran successfully launched its first domestic-made satellite carrier Safir 1 on August, 17, 2008.
In another development head of Iran's Aerospace Organization Reza Taqipour announced last month that the country plans to design and build a satellite called Besharat in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
The Islamic Republic is also expected to launch its first manned space mission by the year 2021.
