Strong quake claims lives, causes damage in southern Iran
Bandar Abbas, Sept 10, IRNA - A powerful quake measuring six on the Richter scale which hit Qeshm Island in Hormuzgan province on Wednesday claimed three lives and injured 26 people. The quake hit Qeshm island at about 15:40 local time (11:10 GMT).

The quake also damaged some 100 residential houses in rural areas. Local official Gholam Ali Daneshvar said the houses were damaged between 30 and 50 percent.

The quake also cut off electricity in some parts of Qeshm Island.

A powerful earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale jolted the vicinity of Khamir port near Bandar Abbas in Hormuzgan province on Wednesday.

The Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, registered the quake at 15:30 hours local time (11:00 GMT).

The epicenter of the quake was located in 26.99 degrees north latitude and 55.75 degrees east longitude.

The strong quake lasted about 30 seconds.

The quake spread panic among the local people who took to the street in search of shelter.

Iran's Red Crescent Society has dispatched rescue teams equipped with most sophisticated equipment to the region.

Iran is often shaken by quakes of varying magnitudes as it sits on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines.
