Baghdad, Sept 19, IRNA - Iran and Iraq are to launch direct flights as of next three weeks, said an Iranian diplomat here Friday.
"Based on agreements finalized by Iranian and Iraqi parties, direct flights will be launched by next three weeks from Tehran and Mashhad to Baghdad and Najaf," said an economic expert at Iran's Embassy in Baghdad Ali Heidari in an interview with IRNA here Friday.
Heidari said the agreement had been reached as a result of several rounds of talks between special envoy of Iran Air Tour and Iraqi transportation officials.
He said the two sides had discussed resumption of direct flights between Tehran and Baghdad, Mashhad and Najaf, Mashhad and Basra, and Mashhad and Baghdad.
To this end, he added, Tehran-Baghdad, Mashhad-Najaf, Mashhad- Basra and Mashhad-Baghdad direct flights will start as of next three weeks.
He noted that the Iraqi party will remove all the impediments and issue necessary permits in next three weeks.
Presently, only Iraqi al-Araqia Aviation Company flies passengers between Tehran and Baghdad.
It has since about 20 days ago raised Tehran-Baghdad flight ticket fare to dlrs 475 from dlrs 350.
The Iranian diplomat said one reason for the increase is rise in global insurance fare.
"Other rivals will possibly force al-Araqiyah to adjust ticket price," he added.
