Tehran's
AAran Art Gallery celebrates its opening by showing 50 photographs of Kamran
Adle . For 50 years Kamran Adle has recorded the pulse of a nation. From
Graffiti at Iranian bazaars to silent moments of reflection at a Zoroastrian
temple. He lives for these moments and never ceases to amaze. The camera has
captured it all, from the high noon lights to the abstract to reflections of
daily life, with the ever present vision of an artist who remains a trail blazer
in his field.

Artist's Note: Where do I begin ? Should I write that I am from a family of…. ?
you can see all of that on my website. So , what must I write ? Of feelings ?
You may or may not know that I have worked on all aspects of photography, and in
all scales , from the Minx camera whose film is in millimeters to film sizes
which are up to 4 or 5 inches in width. As an assistant to Roughen in Paris, I
also worked with 30x40cm films. Despite all that , I feel exhilarated when I
work with a 135 mm camera amongst people , where I submerge in the moment and I
take snap shots. Many believe that I am an architectural photographer, I am also
that , however my preference is to look at Architecture with emotions. I have
written before that Photography is neither a technology nor a technique , not
even an art. Photography is a feeling. One does not sense it until one is a
photographer.

There is a " Time – Zero " in photography , and that is when you
push the " declancheur " button and the final image is captured. In this
collection there is a picture from a 3 part series , of an " Ashura Lamentation
" procession in the city of Bushehr . The first picture is that of 4 to 5
mourners beating their chests and the second picture captures the mourners
noticing me taking their picture and that they do not like my presence . The
third photograph , which is the one in this collection , captures the mourners
approaching me with hostility ; Time-Zero…location-lost …I feel threatened and
exhilarated….. Someone suddenly shouts : " leave him alone ".. I did not know
where the voice came from ,as the moment passed very quickly. All I know is that
if that shout had come two second later, perhaps neither I , nor this picture
would have existed. The result is this photograph that always remains in my
heart. I have always said , and perhaps you may not like it , that photography
is the most challenging and the most difficult profession in the world. In
photography , we encounter a thousand parameters . Even in architectural
photography, with a permit in hand and with no job site dangers and in full
control of nerves , one still should concentrate , because in architectural
photography there are also a thousand parameters , the first of which is the
viewer.

Viewers of photography are numerous and diverse , and a picture is
successful when the viewer connects and relates to that image . You are on one
side of the world and the viewer on the other. One may not even know the other's
language; however the viewer's gaze becomes one's language. In this collection ,
you also see a photo of Niger river in Nigeria , near the city of Niamey . Many
years after that I took another picture of the sun setting on the same river,
but in the city of Djenne in Mali . Look at them both , do you understand me ?
What feelings must I have when taking photos in Malaysia or capturing a moment
in Fort de France in Martinique in the heart of the Caribbean's, not to mention
in Kuwait? The day that I , with a childish feeling decided to become a
photographer; I was searching for adventures, like many other young boys. I
found it , however I did not know its scope and scale I was not sensible then
and I am still not . The scope is so vast ,..it's a galaxy ,.. it has no end in
sight…
