Tehran, Sept 29, IRNA - Tehran province, which accounts for 20 percent of the entire population of the country, is the biggest consuming market for the aquatics.
Head of the provincial Agriculture Jihad Organization's Aquatics Department, Touraj Saremi said that in 2007 more than 23,000 tons of all types of aquatics, which constitute 60 percent of the country's production, were distributed across the province.
He further said that per capita consumption of aquatics in Tehran has increased from 3.5 kilograms in 1997 to 7.8 kilograms in 2007.
Consumption of aquatics in Tehran province reached 2,828 tons in 2007 from 504 tons in 1997, registering a 42 percent increase during the period, Saremi said.
Underlining the per capita aquatics consumption of 11.7 kilograms in the Fourth Development Plan, he said that holding educational courses and holding various exhibitions and festivals on the supply and cooking of aquatics will help promote aquatics consumption as a rich source of protein in the society.
Per capita consumption of aquatics in developing countries stand at 16 kilograms while the figure is 23 in developed states.
