Hormozgan is one of the 30 provinces of Iran. It is in the south of the country, facing Oman. Its area is 68,475 km2, and its provincial capital is Bandar Abbas. The province has 14 islands located in the Persian Gulf, and 1,000 km of coastline. Bandar Abbas is a port city which occupies a strategic position on the narrow Straits of Hormuz, and it is the location of the main base of the Iranian Navy. It had an estimated population of 352,173 in 2005.
