Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art to exhibit hidden art trove

TEHRAN, April 6 (Mehr News Agency) -- The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) plans to put on display a rarely-seen collection of paintings by some of the world's august artists in an exhibition that will open on May 5.

Spanning the 1880s to the 1970s, 150 works will be showcased during the month-long exhibit entitled "Manifestations of Contemporary World Painting", the TMCA curator's advisor, Gholam-Ali Taheri, told the Persian service of CHN on Sunday.

Since many of the world's important modern paintings are kept in TMCA's vault, the show will be a great opportunity for students to visit and see them, Taheri said.

Due to the shortage of display area, the TMCA cannot put the works on display in a permanent exhibit, he noted.

Rarely displayed, the artwork was purchased in 1978 when the museum was established.

In 2005, some of the paintings from the collection were put on display for the first time since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution during a showcase named "Modern Art Movement".

Works by Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Paul Gauguin were present in the show.
