TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Iranian surgeons for the first time in the world transplanted a patient's heart and her two lungs simultaneously in a Tehran hospital.
"Doing such a transplant was a medical wish. Simultaneous surgeries, maintaining anesthesia and high post-operation bleeding all make this surgery very cumbersome, but this long-awaited wish eventually came true in the Masih Daneshvari Hospital, "Ali Akbar Velayati, the hospital president, said on Wednesday.
Dr. Velayati further pointed out that simultaneous transplantation can be done "more in children and adolescents before maturity age who suffer from acute respiratory problems due to congenital heart diseases".
The general conditions of the 12-year-old patient are satisfactory after 48 hours, Velayati said.
He also mentioned that the 6-hour-long operation for transplanting both lungs is also unique in the world, and announced that Iranian surgeons have so far carried out 2 such lung operations during the last year.
