Tehran, April 30, IRNA - Iran marked the Global Action Week of Education for All (EFA) 2009, with a series of events, it was announced here on Thursday.
According to a press release issued by the UN Information Center (UNIC), the events are organized jointly by the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office, the Ministry of Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran, UNESCO's Regional Education Bureau in Bangkok, the Iranian National Commission for UNESCO in conjunction with the country's Presidential Office. The events took place from April 20 onwards.
The purpose of these events was to provide new input toward achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the objectives of Quality Education for All and the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in Iran.
The activities demonstrated the firm commitment of the Iranian authorities responsible for education, teachers and educational institutions to work together with UNESCO for achieving these global goals.
The participants shared the view that at this critical time of global financial crisis, it is more important than ever to join resources and expertise and invest in education. Investing in education is investing in a sustainable future for all.
To launch the EFA Global Action Week 2009, a poster was released during a ceremony at the Sa'adabad Complex, in the presence of 200 students and teachers on April 20, 2009. A musical program followed the poster launch.
The second event was a two-week intensive training on "Education Sector Planning Course: Projects, Teachers & Budget" held in cooperation with UNESCO International Institute for Education Planning (IIEP). The training was attended by some 50 Iranian education planners at the national and the provincial level. Three officials from IIEP served as trainers for the course.
Taking the opportunity of IIEP experts' presence in Tehran, a meeting was held on April 21, 2009 with the Commission of Education and Research of the Iranian Majlis on education strategy for defining joint strategy with UNESCO support to achieve quality education in Iran.
Another two-day workshop with 45 participants from the Ministries of Education, Interior and Agriculture and Department of Environment followed on April 25-26. The subject of the workshop was "National Consultations on Education for Sustainable Development".
A three-day "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Coordination and Capacity Building Workshop for Tehran Cluster Countries took place on April 28-30. The workshop was attended by specialists and secretary generals of Iran and Pakistan National Commissions for UNESCO and senior officials and representatives from Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, responsible for ESD.
The final event of the series was the launch of the "Global Monitoring Report 2009" in Farsi on April 29.
