Exhibition: Fari Shmas JJ Manford and in London

14th July-14th August 2009
76 Harley Street
London W1G 7HH

During the long and inhospitable Chicago winter, Fari Shams and JJ Manford worked in adjacent studios at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There, on the 16th floor, overlooking the frozen lake Michigan, these two artists worked side by side while the neurotic weather turned the lake from liquid to a wasteland of shattered rock.

This show aims to bring together a selection of their paintings and to outline the influences each had on the other during this time.

Born in Tehran, and brought up in London, Shams's work is heavily influenced by her education in Mathematics and Music but in addition draws on the rich seam of philosophical ideas including those of Hafiz, Saadi, Ferdowsi, Shams I Tabriz and Omar Khayam to Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty.

Her consideration therefore shifts and migrates between these ideas without fully adopting any one point of view but rather assuming the possibility that each may well be true.

The result is a journey that immerses the viewer into an abstract world of color and form hauntingly familiar and punctuated with rhythm and gestural nuances that seem to record the artist's journey in understanding these ideas.
