TEHRAN, Aug. 9 (Mehr News Agency) -- MP Hamid-Reza Katouzian has said that a number of prisoners who were arrested in the post-election unrest died due to the beatings they received at the Kahrizak detention center.
No information about the incident has been provided to the Majlis, Katouzian told reporters in Tehran on Sunday.
But the culprits should be dealt with immediately, he added.
The Kahrizak detention center, located south of Tehran, was closed on the order of Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei because it was not up to standards.
Katouzian also said National Police Chief Esmaeil Ahmadi Moqadam is "directly responsible" for the incidents at the Kahrizak detention center.
"The national police chief's explanations and answers were not convincing," he added.
Katouzian said that the Police Command Center receives reports "regularly and on a daily basis" and thus it is highly unlikely that the national police chief was unaware of such issues.
"He is completely and directly responsible and should be held accountable," the MP insisted.
The national police chief has said that "only three prisoners" were subjected to excessive violence at the Kahrizak detention center but no one died due to the mistreatment.
Asked about reports saying that a number of detainees who were released from the detention center died soon afterwards, Ahmadi Moqadam said that according to the findings of the police special committee examining the issue, the prisoners who died after their release died of a disease.
However, it is not clear yet whether the prisoners caught the disease inside or outside the detention center, Ahmadi Moqadam told reporters in Tehran on Sunday.
The special committee has also reported that some officials at the detention center violated the regulations and therefore the director of the center has been sacked and jailed and the chief security officer of the detention center has been reprimanded, he added.
"Three policemen who beat detainees have been jailed as well," IRNA quoted Moghaddam as saying.
"In this issue, nobody can shift responsibility... even I myself am also responsible and should be held accountable," the national police chief stated.
MP Ali Motahhari has called for the national police to identify by name the police officers who violated the law at the Kahrizak detention center and to publish photos of them, and emphasized that the issue should be dealt with in a transparent manner.
"Punishment for these wrongdoers should be decided and people should be given reassurances that the punishment will be administered. Thus, this issue should be completely transparent," he told reporters in Tehran on Sunday.
