Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi
announced that together with his fellow disputing candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi,
he will request a permit from the Ministry of Interior for a street
demonstration. He added that should the request be turned down, they cannot take
responsibility for the "self-directed presence of people" on the streets.
Mehdi Karroubi was quoted on Tagheer website saying: "The authorities are responsible for anything that happens to the revolutionary people of Iran."
Authorities have accused Mousavi supporters of tearing Ayatollah Khomeini's picture on December 7 National Students Day events.
The opposition claims it has been a suspect
scenario aimed at discrediting the Green Movement which has been protesting
against the allegedly fraudulent re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinajed in the past
six months. MirHosein Mousavi claims this scenario is aimed at stepping up
violence against protesters.
Both camps are planning street demonstrations to condemn the desecration of the picture of the Imam (Khomeini) and the opposition leaders are trying to avoid outbreak of violence.
The disputes over the tearing of Ayatollah Khomeini's picture have resulted in continued turmoil in university campuses.
Tehran's Prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi announced today that they have arrested the culprits but released no names.
