While Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the current head of his office Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei have repeatedly made pronouncements about the hidden Shiite Imam (Mahdi) and the time of his appearance, some supporters of the administration have begun to criticize such remarks.

The conservative website Jahan reported that
Habibollah Asgaroladi, the head of the largest conservative coalition known as
the "Coalition of the Line of the Imam and Leadership" criticized such remarks
made by Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei in his latest meeting with Ahmadinejad.
He has told Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about such claims by his advisors, "Some of your friends and colleagues who say that the hidden Imam will appear after you must be seriously warned about that."
The secretary-general of the largest conservative coalition, Coalition of the Line of the Imam and Leadership, added, "With what credentials does he speak about Islam and God? Why must Mashaei make statements and controversies for which you have to be busy responding to the public?
The criticisms of Habibollah Asgaroladi, who is among Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's steadfast supporters, have been interpreted by some experts to have been directed at Ahmadinejad personally, because Efandiar Rahim-Mashaei's comments were made several months ago, while the latest comments about this issue were made by Ahmadinejad himself.
In his latest claim on December 3 in Isfahan, noting the presence of American troops in Iraq, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said, "It is true that these imperialists are after the country's oil and wealth, but they have an underlying rationale based on which they operate. But they don't reveal that in the news. We are in possession of some of their documents. They believe that someone from the Prophet of Islam's family has appeared in this region who will destroy the roots of the evil-doers in the world. They have planned all of this to prevent the Imam's appearance, and they know that the Iranian people have set the stage for his presence and want his rule."
Mehdi Karoubi blasted Ahmadinejad's remarks about America's attempt to prevent the appearance of the hidden Imam for being an "insult to religion."
The secretary-general of the National Trust (E'temad Melli) Party said, "Islamic jurists have always said that those who claim to know about the hidden Imam's appearance are liars. What is this that Ahmadinejad is saying? How can the Americans prevent Mahdi's appearance? They want to arrest him? Or they want to assassinate him?"
Ahmadinejad: God's Representative
Last summer, in critical statements about the behavior of Ahmadinejad and his supporters, which were widely broadcast on media networks, current Tehran mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said, "I regard Ahmadinejad as neither a revolutionary, nor a Hezbollahi, nor a follower of the supreme leader, nor a manager, nor an honest person. Mr. Ahmadinejad, with his entire being, lies to himself and lies to others."
After the election coup and Ahmadinejad's inauguration and swearing-in by ayatollah Khamenei, Ahmadinejad's supporters went even further by claiming that he was God's representative on earth.
Disregarding criticisms from politicians and religious figures, ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi, the spiritual leader of the hardline Shiites, said, "When the president receives the supreme leader's blessing, obeying him is like obeying God."
