Mohammad Khatami: Imam Hossein fought for reform in the Islamic society

Source: Parleman News

Seyyed Mohammad Khatami by pointing out the beginning of the month of Moharam (in which on the 10th day, Ashura, Imam Hossein (the third Imam of Shias) was martyred along with 72 of his loyal allies and some members of his family in an unjust battle with the oppressive ruler of the time) said that the story of Ashura has always been a role model for our nation and made us to resist and be more patient when facing the problems, and we also learned to always fight for good.

Khatami added: "The Islamic society has one major goal and that is to reform the society contentiously; It could be either by reforming the government by establishing a suitable government or by reforming the way government rules and the methods it interacts with the society; Imam Hossein said that he did not fight to gain power but he did fight for reform in the Islamic society. Before the revolution the goal of the reform was to establish a new government but now that the Islamic Republic is established, reform must continue to strengthen it; we should not assume that only because of the term "Islamic Republic" everything is correct and autocrats and short-minded individuals can say and do whatever they want; reform is to improve the affairs with the same standards of the revolution and Imam Khomeini and naturally criticism is also needed and solving the problems with the standards that many sacrifices were made to achieve them is our duty and we have learned this from Imam Hossein."

In another part of his remarks Khatami added that those who are in prison today are among the most dedicated people who served the country and the revolution for many years."

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri: They raise the "overthrowing" charges so that they can repress people.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri announced: "They raise the "overthrowing" charges so that they can repress people and possibly they send some individuals among the people to chant slogans in favor of overthrowing the system. Some examples of these slogans, vandalizing the public properties and rioting by those individuals have been proven to people."

He stressed that: "If the authorities give the permission for free and peaceful gatherings, they will witness that the majority of people don't want anything but to reinstate their denied rights and be compensated for them as well as the freedoms that have been clearly mentioned in the constitution and in general the reform of the system ."

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri added: "At the beginning people protested to the results of the election and their demand was to void the election and hold a proper and legitimate one [instead]. But when they were confronted violently and they were repressed, people raised their demands and especially their target was the repressive organizations and those in charge of them; and following the killing of the innocent people, arrest of the political activists and the illegal and illegitimate show trials, people's demands were risen to the point that one could be concern that if the rulers continue their current method people would distance themselves from the system and the current crisis would deepen. If during those first day people's peaceful protests were dealt with appropriately and reasonably, the situation would not be as it is today."

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri said that Mousavi and Karroubi as the leaders of the Green movement have been accompanying people very well so far and they have provided necessary and useful guidance; and the hope is that they would stay put in the path of defending the rights of the innocent and encouraging the good and preventing the bad."

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri added that people's attention to foreign media is due to the existence of the severe censorship and biased coverage of the events in the state-run TV and radio, that unfortunately have become tools in the hands of a specific group that don't hesitate to use them in order to spread lies against the opposition groups and people.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri emphasized that the best form of the religious rule is based on the theory of the separation of the powers and explained: "In a way that the only responsibility of the elected cleric or clerics would be the religious ruling and to monitor the laws to make sure they are not in contradiction with Islam. The expertise of the clerics cannot be anything more than this and the rest of the affairs of the country should be handed to the professionals who are elected and approved by the people."
