TEHRAN, Feb. 17 (Mehr News Agency) -- Compared with the last year, there has been a significant increase in number of deaths resulting from lung and respiratory diseases among citizens in Tehran.
A total number of 324 Tehrani citizens died of lung diseases over the first nine months of the current year (which ends on March 20, 2009), a recent study by Behesht-e Zahra Organization showed.
The number will nearly double by the end of the year due to a great decrease in rainfall in the capital and a significant increase in air pollution.
Based on the study, lung diseases were responsible for 291 deaths in 1386 (March 20, 2007-2008), out of which 199 were men.
A number of 401 Tehrani citizens died of lung cancer during the first nine months of the current year, Hassan Hoveida, head of Iran General Practitioners' Association said.
Hoveida said in the Iranian calendar year of 1386 (ended March 20, 2008), 762 persons died of lung cancer.
Hoveida described air pollution as the major factor in increasing lung and respiratory diseases in Tehran metropolis.
