30% of Iranian University Students Uninterested in Present Course of Study

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Thirty percent of the Iranian university students are not interested in their fields of study, an official at the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology said.

Expressing concern about the universities' educational stagnation, Hamid Yaqubi said that males receive more conditional passes in universities around the country.

According to MNA, he said that decrease in motivation to increase knowledge and improve skills is the main reason behind male's educational stagnation.

"Lack of motivation leads men to receive more conditional passes," Yaqubi added, calling for the government to set an agenda for the establishment of a working group to prevent the country's educational stagnation.

Iran's university student numbers had risen from about 2.150 million in 2005 to over 3.5 million in 2008.

The university capacity for master's degree has reached to 40 thousands in 2008 from about 20 thousands in 2005 and the universities' PHD capacity has reached to 4 thousands in 2008 from 2 thousands in 2005.
