Thailand were sent packing from the football competition by table-toppers Iran, who beat them 4-0 at Temasek Polytechnic. The final group match encounter saw Iran dominate the play and come out easy victors to top Group A with nine points.

Iranian coach Mohd Yavari said: "Our aim was to win this match and rest some players and I'm happy we achieved both."

Iran was the first team to qualify for the semi-finals of the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) Singapore 2009 football competition after beating the People's Republic of China 4-2 in an adrenaline-pumping match at Temasek Polytechnic on 29 June 2009.

Prior to that, Iran had defeated Singapore 2-1 and Chinese Taipei 6-0 (prelim game).
