A year ago to the day

By Brian H. Appleton (aka Rasool Aryadust) -

I was in Kasra Hospital saying hello to the nurses who had taken care of Adelle Freedman, Jewish American earthquake victim of Bam documented in Jahangir Golestan's film Bam 6.6. in 2003, which came away with three awards at the LA Noor Film Festival two years ago. I gave the nurses DVD copies of the film as well as one to Adelle's surgeon, Dr. Noroozi, who had refused to take any payment for his five hours of reconstructive surgery on her feet.

How kind they were to her. How strange it is to think about the hospitals now full beyond bursting with baton brutalized protestors and Basijis entering hospitals and hauling the injured off to jails also full to the bursting. With the voices of thousands shouting death to the dictator and God is great from the rooftops at night like 1979 over again...30 years later and the same problem...dictatorship...

For years I have been advocating for peace and against USA attack and sanctions on Iran but the enemy is not without, it is is so very disappointing and depressing...

I remember one day last summer eating at a beautiful outdoor restaurant in Evin called SPU and how everyone was out walking or sitting basking in the sun. One old man had taken his bamboo cage of canaries out for some fresh air. He was holding the cage on his lap as he sat on a low retaining wall in the bright light while the birds twittered away...I had never seen anyone take their bird cage out for a walk before...that same week 20 "drug dealers" were executed in it is filled with detainees being interrogated and tortured.

Sa'ad Abad palace complex where the world's largest carpet is being woven for strange now that there is no peace in Iran...when I was there at the front door to one of the palaces, a young man was playing international songs on one of the little zithers he was selling. He even played the Israeli national anthem...ironic now that Mashaee is being asked to resign for saying Iran had no quarrel with the people of Israel...obviously what we have here is yet another government completely out of step with its people but determined to use any means of force and intimidation to keep in power...

Once again the Iranian people have been cheated by an elite held in place by brutality...their hopes for change and political moderation through a peaceful process lie somewhere in an uncertain future.
