Mastan Ensemble
The Mastan
Ensemble is an Iranian musical group performing traditional Persian music. The
group was founded first as Hafez Ensemble in 2005 by Saeid (Saeed) Jafarzadeh
Ahmad Sargoorabi, later known as Homay. Homay was born 1979 in the Northern
Iranian state of Gilan by the Caspian Sea. He graduated college with a Music
degree and specialized in playing setar and piano. In Voice, he was a student of
maestros Fereydoon Poor-Reza, Seyed Kamaleddin Abbasi, Hengameh Akhavan. Karim
Saleh Azimi, and in Persian literature and lyrics, a student of Aligholi
Mahmoudi Bakhtiari, Habib Nabavi, Mahmoud Tayyari and Dadbeh Bahremand.
The group's
performance follows a Persian tradition of music making known as Chāmeh Sarā'i (چامه
سرایی) according to which one person is in charge of writing the poems,
composing the musics, arranging the instruments as well as singing the songs.
The instruments employed by this Ensemble include Daf, Dayereh, Kamāncheh, Lute,
Reed, Robab, Santour, Tār and Tonbak. The Mastān Ensemble derive their
inspirations from such Sufi poets as Farid ad-Din Attar, Hafez and Rumi. The
performances of this Ensemble are rhythmic, uplifting and mesmerizing and the
lyrics are thoughtful and philosophical.
