Rome, June 4, IRNA - Italian Foreign Ministry extended an invitation on Thursday to the Islamic Republic of Iran to attend the G-8 foreign ministerial meeting in Triste, Italy.
Italy's special representative to Afghanistan said that the invitation letter has been sent to foreign ministers of 30 countries around the globe including Iran's foreign minister.
Foreign ministers from eight major industrialized countries known as G-8 are to gather in the city of Triste, northeast Italy, to discuss restoration of security and stability to Afghanistan and Pakistan, from June 25-27.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini underlined the need to invite Iran to the international gathering during his talks with his US and European counterparts.
Iran as a powerful country in the region should help restore security to Afghanistan and also assist western and Nato forces in the country, said the Italian foreign minister.
