SEOUL, South Korea, June 15 (Mehr News Agency) -- Coach Afshin Ghotbi assured the nation on Monday that Iran will book a berth in the 2010 World Cup.
Iran is scheduled to play South Korea on Wednesday at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Ghotbi, Guus Hiddink's assistant with Korea Republic during the 2002 World Cup, believed the Koreans would be tough opponents despite already qualifying for their eighth World Cup.
"I promise you will see us in South Africa," Ghotbi said. "I know South Korea well and I know their players, as we were in a World Cup together, and I don't accept that they'll lack motivation. Every team in the world has motivation."
Meanwhile, Korea Republic's Huh Jung-moo has said he will play his strongest line-up in the game. An Iran win would assure them of at least the third-place play-off spot.
Iran is fourth in Group B in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifiers with seven points. South Korea tops the pool with 15 points, followed by its northern neighbor with 11 points, with Saudi Arabia in third, also with 11 points. The UAE have just one point.
The third-place team in the group will go to a playoff with the third-place team in Group A for the right to play Oceania champion New Zealand for a spot at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
