WHEREAS, any official position of the City of Los Angeles
with respect to legislation, rules, regulations or policies proposed to or
pending before a local, state or federal governmental body or agency must
have first been adopted in the form of a Resolution by the City Council with
the concurrence of the Mayor; and
WHEREAS, all human beings have the right to fair treatment
by their government; and
WHEREAS, Iran has recently undergone a national election
process which has resulted in mass demonstrations and challenges; and
WHEREAS, the Iranian people have utilized internet social
networking programs to share photographs, videos, and first hand accounts of
violent government response to peaceful protestors; and
WHEREAS, currently pending in Congress is a Resolution, H.
Res. 560 I S. Res. 193 expressing support for all Iranian citizens
who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule
of law; and
WHEREAS, this legislation also condemns the ongoing violence
against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias,
as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic
communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and
WHEREAS, this legislation also affirms the universality of
individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections; and
WHEREAS, Los Angeles has a large community of residents of
Iranian origin as well a a long-established sister city relationship with
Tehran, Iran;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, with the concurrence of the
Mayor, that by the adoption of this Resolution, the City of Los Angeles
hereby includes in its 2009-2010 Federal Legislative Program support for H.
Res. 560 I S. Res. 193, expressing support for all Iranian citizens
who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule
of law.
