Zahedan, Mar 5, IRNA - Energy Planning managing director of Iran's Petroleum Ministry said on Wednesday consumption of energy in Iran at all sectors is 2.5 times average world usage.
Mohammad Reza Khattatie who was speaking at Energy Conference held at Sistan-o-Balouchestan University added, "Last year, due to energy crisis, the energy consumption had a declining rate globally."
He added, "All the same, in Iran from the year 1996 till the year 2008 the average energy consumption increased from 2.88 to 3.27 percent, that is 2.5 times average global consumption rate."
Khattati reiterated, "With this rate of energy consumption in the country it would be impossible to achieve the topmost scientific, technological and economic status in the region, as defined in the country's Twenty Year Perspective, within the next two decades' time."
He added, "Iran has the second largest natural gas resources next to Russia, and the second largest oil resources after Saudi Arabia, ranking 3rd in those respects globally."
Khattati said, "The government's efforts are aimed at reaching our 70% share of natural gas usage in our national energy basket, and we have already reached the 60% range nationwide."
He emphasized, "Gas can be used as a means for social welfare, generating wealth, income creating, and sustainable development, due to its environmental advantages, compared to other fuels, in addition to providing the possibility for strategic interactions that we can have at the international scene resorting to our natural gas resources."
According to him, keeping in mind that energy security is of great significance for world nations, the over-usage of natural gas in Iran has reached from warning to hazard level in our country."
The Petroleum Ministry official added, "Last year, due to the emergence of natural gas crisis in the country, many factories were shut down during the cold season and providing electricity for the large cities was faced with great difficulties, under such conditions that the natural gas usage had increased drastically due to unprecedented long and cold winter in many decades."
He added, "The average usage of natural gas in Europe is around 600 million cubic meters that equals the consumption of natural gas in Iran during the cold season."
Khattati reiterated, "In our country home and commercial usages have taken the place of the type of energy consumption that can generate wealth, which is a point worth contemplation."
The Energy Planning Managing Director of the Petroleum Ministry concluded his remarks arguing, "In order to achieve our desired status at our Twenty Year Perspective Document we need to adopt strategies to decrease the home and commercial consumptions and replace them with usage types that can produce wealth."
