Tehran, March 9, IRNA -- The 18th foreign ministerial meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization opened in Tehran on Monday.
The meeting is to make necessary preparations for the ECO Summit due to open on Wednesday and also elect the chairman for the Summit.
The meeting will hear a report to be made by the ECO secretary general, will review the reports of ECO expert agencies and regional institutions and will draft a statement to be issued by the Summit of Leaders.
The ECO foreign ministerial meeting convenes annually in one member state.
ECO chief Khurshid Anwar had earlier said that a number of memorandums of understanding (MOUs) will be signed at the Summit of Leaders in Tehran on March 11.
He said the MOUs will focus on ways to facilitate multilateral trade and transit cooperation, boost ECO members' ties with the Islamic Development Bank and enhance the standards of ECO products.
The presidents of ECO member states as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan plus the heads of states of Iraq and Qatar are scheduled to meet in Tehran on March 11 to explore ways to expand their relations.
The Economic Cooperation Organization is an intergovernmental international organization involving ten Asian nations.
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are the members of ECO.
