Tehran, March 10, IRNA - Visiting Azeri President Ilham Aliyev Conferred on Tuesday with President Mahmound Ahmadinejad on expansion of mutual relations ad on regional as well as global developments.
At the meeting, the two presidents called for adoption of a unified stand in dealing with the plots hatched by the enemies.
Tehran and Baku are determined to thwart plans by trans-regional powers and enemies to undermine security in the region, underlined the two presidents.
Describing the two sides' relations as strategic, the two presidents said that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan play active role in maintaining security and stability in the region.
Tehran and Baku see no limits on broadening bilateral ties, they said, adding that the two sides are now witnessing expansion of economic, security, political, cultural and industrial cooperation to serve the two countrties' interests.
There are ample grounds for mutual cooperation in various fields such as energy, transportation, transit of goods, electricity and gas, they said, adding that expansion of banking cooperation could help enhance ties between the two sides.
Underscoring the need for expansion of regional cooperation, they said the recent ECO meeting had very fruitful results in meeting the interests of all nations of the region.
Western countries seek to transfer their problems to the countries of the region such as Iran and Azerbaijan, but expansion of ties between the two sides would protect them against such plots, said the two presidents.
Iran regards Azerbaijan's development and progress as its own, said President Ahmadinejad, adding that Iran is willing to put its significant achievements at the disposal of Azerbaijan.
Existing ties between Iran and Azerbaijan set a good pattern for other countries in the region, said the Iranian president.
President Ilham Aliyev heading a high-ranking delegation arrived in Tehran on Tuesday morning.
Aliyev was officially welcomed by his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the Presidential Office in Tehran.
The Azeri president is to attend the 10th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit and hand over the ECO presidency to President Ahmadinejad on Wednesday, March 11.
The 18th ECO foreign ministerial meeting started work in Tehran on Monday morning to make preparations for the ECO Summit.
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are the ECO member states.
