ECO leaders stress need for regional, international cooperation

Tehran, March 12, IRNA - Leaders participating at Tehran 10th Economic Cooperation (ECO) Summit issued a joint communiqué on Wednesday, stressing need for regional and international cooperation to counter global crises.

According to IRNA reporter at Summit site, the participating heads of states and top regional officials participating at the summit, chaired by IRI President Mahmoud Ahmahdinejad, included:

  • Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai
  • Azerbaijan's President Elham Aliev
  • Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Karim Massimov
  • Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari
  • First Deputy Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Omurbek Bananov
  • Tajikistan's President Imomali Rakhmon
  • Turkey's President Abdullah Gul
  • Turkmenistan's President Gurnanguly Berdimuhamedow
  • And Uzbekistan's Senate Speaker Elixir Saberev

The ECO heads of states have in their final communiqué referred to major regional and international crises, such as the ongoing global economic crisis, and focused on the performance of the ECO thus far, surveying the achieved advancements ever since the last ECO summit and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

They have meanwhile presented guidelines on how to accelerate the development trend in various fields to the member countries and governments, such as:

  • Regional cooperation as an important measure aimed at boosting social, economic and sustainable regional development and stability;
  • Renewing commitment to Izmir ECO Summit Covenant objectives, the 2015 ECO Perspective, and other major documents and declaration of the former ECO summits;
  • Appreciating major initiatives aimed at strengthening ECO as an effective means for regional proximity;
  • Focusing on achieved advancements in implementation of the key ECO agreements, inclusive of the agreement on transportation and transit framework, the ECO Trade Agreement, and the need for implementation of the agreement on need for establishment of the ECO Trade and Development Bank;
  • Reiterating that the ongoing global crisis is due to the existence of weak standards, extravagance in usage of resources, taking advantage of illogical crisis management methods, over-injection of capital, lack of transparency, incompetence of international monetary institutes and unbalanced international trade, solving which is in need of greater cooperation and consultations among ECO member states;
  • Surveying dimensions of the ongoing global economic crisis and its aftermaths for ECO member states, keeping in mind the rich natural resources, growing educated work forces, and strong will of ECO members to solve this global crisis, there is a need for taking steps towards achieving that objective;
  • Appreciating the cooperation of member states for accelerating the implementation trend of ECO agreements, and fully implementing some of them.

Also, 39 guidelines were presented aimed at achieving those objectives, such as establishment of a Free ECO Trade Zone by the year 2015; establishment of the ECO Trade and Development Bank; entire members' joining to reciprocal investment agreement and the one on the establishment of an information bank on smuggling and customs clearance deviations.

ECO member countries' heads of states and governments at the end deeply appreciated the IRI President Mahmoud Ahmahdinejad for wise guidance of the 10th ECO Summit discussions, and the Iranian government and nation's warm hospitality in hosting the event.

The 10th ECO Summit has also welcomed the Islamic Republic of Pakistan's proposal for hosing the next ECO Summit in the year 2010.
