Congressman Michael M. Honda (CA-15th) plans to introduce a bipartisan resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday, March 19, 2009 in observance of the Iranian New Year. To date, original cosponsors include Representatives Keith Ellison (MN-5th), Bob Filner (CA-51st), Raul Grijalva (AZ-7th), Dennis Kucinich (OH-10th), Carolyn Maloney (NY-14th), James Moran (VA-8th), Linda Sanchez (CA-39th), Henry Waxman (CA-30th), and Frank Wolf (VA-10th).

The resolution will recognize the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz, express appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions to American society, and wish Iranian Americans and all those who celebrate the holiday a prosperous new year.
"Nowruz provides an opportunity to appreciate the contributions of Iranian Americans to our society. They have made noteworthy and lasting contributions in all sectors of American public life, including as government, military and law enforcement officials, and in the fields of medicine, engineering, and business," said Honda.
After much thought and feedback from other members of Congress, Congressman Honda has opted to revise the original text of the resolution and take the opportunity to also congratulate the people of Iran and wish them a prosperous New Year.  PAAIA is supportive of this and other changes to the language of the resolution.  In fact, PAAIA has worked closely with Congressman Honda's office to ensure that the language of the resolution also captures the inclusive spirit of Nowruz.  For example, at PAAIA's suggestion Congressman Honda has added language, which states "Nowruz embodies the tradition that each individual's thinking, speaking, and conduct should always be virtuous, and the ideal of compassion for our fellow human beings regardless of ethnicity or religion."
PAAIA has urged the introduction of the Nowruz resolution as a part of its broader efforts to foster greater understanding of the Iranian culture and heritage as well as projecting an accurate and positive image of the Iranian American community that truly reflects our values and achievements.  The resolution will mark the first time that members of Congress have introduced a measure recognizing the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz.
PAAIA wishes to thank NIAC and the many Iranian Americans who have supported this resolution and urged its introduction in Congress.
